The Billiken softball team opened the Georgia State Tournament with a split of its opening doubleheader. The Bills shutout Mercer 5-0 in the first game, but were shutout by Eastern Michigan 3-0 in the nightcap.
Versus Mercer, sophomore pitcher Nicole Bohnenstiehl allowed just one hit and struck out 11 in picking up the victory. Erin Jeffrey opened the first inning by reaching base and was sacrifice over by Beth Puttcamp. Janet Venorsky drove in the only run the Billikens would need. In the second, Saint Louis tacked on four more runs. Kerri Higgins began the rally and a crucial error on a ball hit by Puttcamp opened the floodgates as the Billikens tacked on two more runs. Beth Yagge closed out the outburst with an RBI single. Bohnenstiehl was dominating again in picking up her third win of the season.
In game two, both teams managed four hits but the Billikens could not string more than one hit in any inning and fell to the Eagles. Eastern Michigan tallied all three runs in the second inning with three hits and a crucial double. Heather Hubert took the loss for the Billikens despite striking out seven EMU batters.
The Billikens are now 5-4 on the season. Saint Louis continues in action at the Georgia State Tournament on Saturday with a 10 a.m. game against Furman before beginning single-elimination play.
