Box Score
Kansas City, Mo. -
The Saint Louis University softball team won its 17th game of the season in dramatic fashion as the Billikens continued the program's best season since 1987. The Bills dropped game one of a doubleheader at UMKC by a 7-3 score but bounced back in the second game with three runs in the top of the 10hth inning in a 4-1 triumph.
The Billikens jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the top of the second. Janet Venorsky led off the inning with a single and Nicole Bohnenstiel doubled her in. Adrie Bogaars sacrificed her up a base and Meredith Henry's groundout scored SLU's pitcher. UMKC came back with three runs in the third via four hits and a sac fly. SLU tied the game in the fourth inning. Venorsky doubled with one out and Bogaars singled to right to tie the game. In the bottom of the fifth, Amy Bernard homered for UMKC for a 4-3 lead and the Kangaroos added two more runs in the inning. UMKC sealed the victory with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Shelly Miller picked up her 10th win of the season. Bohnenstiehl struck out eight and is just one K away from tying the SLU single-season record of 172.
In game two, the Bills pushed across three runs in the top of the 10th for a thrilling 4-1 victory. Adrie Bogaars singled in an insurance run as SLU took the 4-1 lead. Heather Hubert kept the Kangaroos off the board in the tenth for her sixth win of the season. The Billikens scored an unearned run in the first but UMKC tied the game in the third. But both pitchers were outstanding as SLU managed just two hits through nine innings and UMKC was held in check, too.
The Billikens improve to 17-20 while UMKC stands at 15-22. Saint Louis is next in action on Fri., April 13, when UAB visits for a Conference USA series for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at The Billiken Sports Center.
