The UAB Blazers swept a doubleheader from the Saint Louis softball team in Conference USA action on Friday. UAB edged the Billikens 1-0 in the first game and took game two by a 5-0 count. During the second game, sophomore pitcher Nicole Bohnenstiehl set the SLU single-season strikeout record with 177 to break the previous record of 172 set by Mikki McPherson in 1993.
The Blazers scored the game's only run in the second. Beth Mullins singled with one out and Jessica Smith followed with a single. Mullins was heading to third but the throw was errant and she sprinted home with the only run of game one. Freshman Heather Huber was outstanding on the mound for SLU, allowing just five hits and the unearned run. Kerri Foster picked up the win for the Blazers and held the Bills to just three hits.
In game two, Beth Mullins launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to cap a three-run outburst and the Blazers moved on for the 5-1 victory. Leading 3-0 after the first, UAB tacked on two more runs on three singles. Amanda Ellis, Candice Hithe and Jessica Brown hit safely to push across two runs for UAB. Nicole Bohnenstiehl reached on an error to start the Bills off in the seventh inning. Cori Bittick came on as a pinch hitter and Kerri Higgins singled to center to drive in the lone Billiken run of the day. Kelli Thompson went the distance and allowed just five hits for UAB. Bohnenstiehl struck out seven to set the single-season record for the Billikens.
The Billikens fall to 17-22, 2-9 in Conference USA, while UAB improves to 21-26, 5-6 in C-USA. The teams finish up the three-game set with one game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at The Billiken Sports Center.
