UAB Holds Off SLU 4-2 In Softball

April 14, 2001

Box Score

St. Louis - The UAB Blazers completed a three-game sweep over Saint Louis in Conference USA softball play with a 4-2 victory on Saturday. During the game, Billiken senior Meredith Henry broke the single-season home run record with her fourth homer of the year.

The Blazers pushed across two runs in the top of the first. Candice Hithe singled, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. Cliffanie Engram reached on a fielder's choice and plated Hithe with the first run of the game. Engram then scored on when Beth Mullins reached on a SLU error to give UAB a 2-0 lead. In the top of the fifth, UAB added a single run. Amanda Ellis singled to right and UAB was successful on two straight sac bunts. Jessica Brown lined a single to left as Ellis put UAB up 3-0.

The Billikens answered in the bottom of the fifth on Henry's record setting home run. Pitcher Heather Hubert reached on a UAB error and Henry followed with a deep shot to left center to pull the Billikens to 3-2. The homer was Henry's fourth on the season and the ninth of her career, also a school record. UAB then scored an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Kelli Thompson singled to left. The Bills looked like they might escape the inning, but UAB hurler Kerri Foster helped herself with a long double to left center to drive Thompson in for a 4-2. Henry doubled in the bottom of the seventh, but was stranded there.

Foster picked up the win for UAB by striking out five SLU batters and allowed just one earned run. Hubert K'd two batters and allowed only two earned runs but was dealt the loss for the Billikens.

The Billikens dip to 17-23, 2-10 in Conference USA. The Blazers improve to 22-26, 6-6 in C-USA. The Billikens welcome Belmont on Monday, April 16, for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at The Billiken Sports Center.
