Box Score

St. Louis - The Saint Louis University softball team swept a doubleheader from Belmont on a windy afternoon at The Billiken Sports Center on Monday. The Billikens won game one 1-0 and pounded out a 5-1 triumph in game two. The wins push the Billiken victory total to 19, the third-best season in school history. During game two, junior Erin Jeffery tied the single-season record for hits with her 44th hit of the season.

The Billikens pushed across one run in the bottom of the first and starter Erin Jeffery singled to begin the bottom of the first and stole second. With two outs, Jane Venorsky lined a double to right center to plate Jeffery. Hubert held the Bruins in check the entire game and posted her second shutout of the season. She struck out six batters to pick up her seventh victory of the year. Jeffery was the offensive standout with hits in all three of her at-bats and had two stolen bases. Mandy Miles allowed just the one unearned run for Belmont and took the loss.

The Billiken offense took over in the second game, pounding out nine hits and scored in all the odd innings for a 5-1 win. Beth Puttcamp reached on an error in the bottom of the first and moved to second on a fielder's choice. Nicole Bohnenstiehl launched a long single that plated Puttcamp and Beth Yagge. In the third inning, Yagge launched a deep home run, her first of the season, to centerfield to stake the Billikens to a 3-0 advantage. In the fifth, Jeffery collected her fourth hit of the day which gave her 44 on the season to tie the record of Dawn Elser who also had 44 hits during the 1987 season. Yagge doubled Jeffery in and Jessica Saucedo singled to score Yagge and give the Bills a 5-0 lead. Bohnenstiehl was looking for the shutout but Virginia Blocker broke up the bid with a solo homer in the top of the seventh. Bohnenstiehl picked up her 12hth victory of the season and struck out eight.

The Billikens improve to 19-23 overall while Belmont falls to 12-36. The Billikens are next in action on Wed., April 18, at 4 p.m. when they travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo., to take on Southeast Missouri State.
