Southern Miss Shuts Down Billiken Offense

Hattiesburg, Miss. - Felicia Gonzales, one of the top pitchers in Conference USA, proved it on Friday night as she held the Saint Louis University softball team to just one hit in a 6-0 win by the Golden Eagles. The lone Bills' hit was by Nicole Bohnenstiehl in the second inning.

Southern Miss scored the only run it would need in the bottom of the first. Amanda Brown walked and stole second to lead off the bottom of the inning. Tammy Edwards doubled her in for the game's first run. USM added another run in the third when Robbi Roberson drew a walk and scored on Edward's second double. Southern Miss added an unearned run in the fifth and sealed the victory with three more unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. Gonzales was in command for the entire game and allowed only one walk to go along with the one hit for her 23rd win of the year. Heather Hubert went the distance for the Billikens and scattered six hits but was touched for four unearned runs and struck out five Eagles.

The Billikens dip to 20-25, 2-11 in Conference USA. Southern Miss wins its fourth straight and is 36-15, 9-4 in C-USA play. The teams play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. in Hattiesburg, Miss.
