The Southern Miss Golden Eagles completed a three-game sweep of the Saint Louis softball team on Saturday with 5-1 and 4-0 decisions in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Billiken bats were held in check in the doubleheader, tallying just eight hits combined in the two games.
Southern Miss took a 1-0 in the bottom of the first when Channika Gant reached on a SLU error and moved to second on a sac bunt. She stole third and came around to score on another SLU fielding error. In the fifth, the Golden Eagles tallied three runs, capped by Amanda Brown's two-run homer. USM tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth before the Billikens scored their only run of the day. With one out in the top of the seventh, Nicole Bohnenstiehl powered a homer to center field for the final 5-1 margin. Melissa Cundiff allowed only four hits to pick up her 14th win of the season. Bohnenstiehl struck out eight and went the distance but took the loss for the Billikens.
In game two, USM scored the only run it would need in the first. Robbi Roberson singled with one out and moved up one base on a wild pitch. Tammy Edwards singled Roberson in for a 1-0 advantage. Southern Miss put up two more runs in the third on two hits and a Billiken error. The Golden Eagles capped the day with a single tally in the sixth for the 4-0 score. The Billikens had runners reach second base three times, but each runner was stranded there. Beth Puttcamp had two hits and a stole base for the Bills but her teammates combined for only two other hits. Felicia Gonzales, who one-hit SLU yesterday, allowed just four hits and struck out nine for the 24th victory of the year. Heather Hubert battled with six Ks and allowed three runs in the complete game for the Billikens.
The Billikens fall to 20-27, 2-13 in Conference USA while Southern Miss improves to 38-15, 11-4 in C-USA play. The Billikens return home to The Billiken Sports Center on Tue., April 24, for a doubleheader against UMKC beginning at 2 p.m.
