Erin Jeffery sinlged in the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to boost the Saint Louis University softball team to a 1-0 win over UMKC at The Billiken Sports Center on Tuesday afternoon. However, the Billikens fell short in the second game as UMKC posted a 9-3 win.
In the first game, both starting pitchers were splendid and kept the opposing team off balance. The Kangaroos were shutout as Billiken pitcher Nicole Bohnenstiehl scattered seven hits. Shelly Miller silenced the Bills on two hits through six innings before the Billikens finally broke through in the seventh. In the top of the seventh, UMKC had two runners on and Lindsey Ramsey lined a sinking-drive to left field, but Beth Puttcamp sprinted in and made a splendid catch to prevent any damage. In the botttom of the seventh, Meredith Henry drew a one-out walk and Jessica Saucedo came on to pinch run. Jamie Hayden lined a single to center with two outs to put Saucedo into scoring position. Jeffery drilled a single to right field and Saucedo scored the game-winning run. Bohnenstiehl struck out seven and posted her sixth shutout of the season to notch the win. Shelly Miller was the tough-luck loser for UMKC.
The Kangaroos scored in four straight innings and moved on for a 9-3 triumph in game two. UMKC used three hits and took advantage of two passed balls to score two unearned runs in the second. The Kangaroos added tow more runs in the third when Ramsey doubled in a run and Amanda Rice tripled in a score to boost UMKC's lead to 4-0. Picther Jill Dolan singled and scored on Amy Barnard's triple for a 5-0 Kangaroo lead. The Billikens earned one run back in the bottom of the fourth when Jamie Hayden fielder's choice scored Kerri Higgins. But UMKC sealed the victory in the seventh with three runs on three hits and took advantage of a SLU fielding error to push the margin to 9-2. Hayden had her second RBI of the game when she grounded out to the pitcher to score Puttcamp but the Bills could not get any closer than the 9-3 final. Heather Hubert went the distance but took the loss for the Billikens. Jill Dolan picked up the win for UMKC.
The Billikens are now 21-28 overall while UMKC sees its record at 18-31. The Billikens host their final home series of the year this weekend when Houston visits for Conference USA action. A doubleheader on Saturday begins at 1 p.m. at The Billiken Sports Center.
