The Saint Louis University softball team pushed across six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and posted an 8-2 victory over Houston in game one of a doubleheader in Conference USA league play on a sunny Saturday afternoon at The Billiken Sports Center. The eight runs were the most the Billikens have scored in a C-USA game. In game two, the Cougars rallied to post a 4-3 win over the Billikens.
The Cougars took an early 1-0 lead when Arelis Ferreris singled in Leslie Seay in the top of the first. The Billikens tied the game on Beth Yagge's RBI single to score Erin Jeffery. In the bottom of the second, Erin Jeffery was the offensive standout for the Billikens with three hits and two runs scored.
In game two, the Cougars rallied from a 3-2 deficit to tally single runs in the sixth and seventh for the 4-3 come-from-behind win. Houston took a 2-0 lead in the first when Seay's triple to right drove in Netardus. Seay later scored on a passed ball. The Billikens answered with consecutive RBI doubles by Beth Yagge's and Janet Venorsky to tie the game 2-2. Jeffery singled with two out but advanced all the way to third on a fielding error by Houston. Beth Puttcamp singled to give the Billikens a 3-2 margin. Jeffery, making her third pitching appearance of the season, retired 14 of 15 batters after the first inning, but Houston broke through to tie the game in the sixth. Netardus singled to open the sixth and promptly stole second. Lindsay Durham's sac bunt moved her to third and Seay's second hit of the game tied the game at 3-3. In the top of the seventh, Melissa Lynch reached on a SLU error and then stole second. Thompson singled to put runners at first and third and Tiffany Raburn followed with the game-winning single. Jenny Johnson struck out six and allowed just two earned runs to notch the win for Houston.
The Billikens are now 22-29 overall, 3-14 in Conference USA. Houston moves to 19-30, 7-9 in C-USA. The Billikens host their final home game of the year on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Houston. at The Billiken Sports Center.
