The Louisville Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom of the first and held the Billikens off for a 3-1 decision in Conference USA softball action on Sunday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium in Louisville.
Keola Calderon laced a single to left scoing Coleen Coughlin with the first run of the game. Melissa Jacobo drew a walk to load the bases and Nicoel Sparks lofted a sac fly to left to hand the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage. The Billikens answered in the top of the third with one run. Jamie Hayden drew a walk to lead off the inning and moved to second on Erin Jeffrey's infield single. Janet Venorsky singled to right to plate Hayden as the Bills drew to 2-1. Nicole Bohnenstiehl drew a walk to continue the threat but the Bills could not push across the tying run.
The Cardinals got that run back in the third with three hits and took advantage of a SLU error. With two outs and the bases loaded, Lisa McMillan singled to right to restore the UofL lead to two runs at 3-1. However, Louisville hurler Jessica McClure made the advantage standup and allowed only two SLU runners the rest of the way. McClure picked up her 14hth win of the season while Bohnenstiehl took the loss for the Billikens.
The Billikens drop to 16-19 overall, 2-7 in Conference USA. Louisville ups its' record to 32-13, 7-2 in C-USA. The Bills will next be in action on Wed., April 11, at UMKC in a game which was rescheduled due to rain. The doubleheader will start at 2 p.m. in Kansas City.
