Box Score

Louisville, Ky. - The Saint Louis University softball team was held to just two hits and dropped a 9-0 decision in the first game of the 2001 Conference USA Softball Tournament, presented by UofL Health Care, on Thursday afternoon in Louisville. The Bills take on the loser of the South Florida/UAB game in an elimination game at 6:30 (ET) at Ulmer Stadium.

The Billikens were in trouble in the first inning when Southern Miss loaded the bases, but pitcher Heather Hubert notched a strikeout to end the threat. However, the Golden Eagles broke through for four runs in the second. A leadoff triple and SLU error scored the first run for USM. The Golden Eagles used two fielder's choices and two more base hits to push the lead to 4-0 as Southern Miss sent nine hitters to the plate.

Two more SLU errors in the third followed by hits by Boyd and Martin drove in two more runs for a 6-0 margin. Kerri Higgins singled to lead off the fourth inning for the Billikens for the first hit of the game for SLU. However, the Billikens were unable to push her across home and only got one other hit, from Hubert, the rest of the game. USM's Kelly McMains' fielder's choice scored the seventh run of the game and Robbi Roberson's single to center ended the game in the fifth inning.

The Billikens were held in check by All-Conference USA Freshman pitcher Melissa Cundiff as the Golden Eagles notched their 43rdd win of the season. The Bills dip to 25-33 on the campaign.
