Softball Team Wins UT-Martin Tournament

Martin, Tenn. - The Saint Louis University softball team won the championship of the UT-Martin Tournament with wins over Indiana State and Lipscomb on Sunday. The Billikens avenged their only loss of the season with a 5-1 decision over Indiana State and then downed Lipscomb by a 4-2 score. The Bills improve to 8-1 on the season, the best start in school history.

Saint Louis began Sunday with the victory over the Sycamores. Erin Jeffery reached on a fielder's choice in the third and stole second. After an ISU error, Jeffery scored on an RBI single by Nicole Bohnenstiehl. The Billikens' lead reached 2-0 in the fourth. Heather Hubert reached on an error and took second on a passed ball. Jamie Hayden drove Hubert in with an single to right. The SLU lead doubled in the sixth when Jeffery's scored Hayden and Adrienne May. Adrie Bogaars completed the scoring in the top of the seventh with a solo home run. Hubert allowed an unearned run in the top of the seventh, but improved her record to a perfect 5-0 by striking out seven and walking none.

Against Lipscomb, the Billikens scored late in the contest to take a 4-2 decision. Erin Jeffery tied the SLU career hits record with a single in the bottom of the first. Jeffery has 143 hits in her career to tie the mark previously set by Dawn Elser and Missy Keim. Pitcher Nicole Bohnenstiehl drove in Jeffery with an RBI grounder to give SLU a 1-0 lead. Lipscomb tied the game in the top of the fourth, but the Bills retook the lead in the fifth. A Lipscomb error allowed Beth Yagge and Jessica Saucedo to score the go-ahead runs. The Lady Bison got one run back in the sixth, but Bohnenstiehl's solo home run provided the Billikens an insurance run. Bohnenstiehl struck out seven and went the distance to pick up her third win of the year.
