The Saint Louis University softball team swept Belmont University 8-0 and 12-5 on Sunday. In the first inning of game one, senior outfielder Erin Jeffery (St. Louis, Mo. / Lutheran South) broke the Billiken career hits record with a single to right field. The hit was the 144th of her career, surpassing the previous best of 143 set by Dawn Elser and Missy Keim.
In game one, the Billikens tallied all the runs they would need in the third inning. Jeffery singled and stole second. She advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an Adrienne May single. Nicole Bohnenstiehl doubled to score May. After an Adrie Bogaars walk, Beth Yagge drove in Bohnenstiehl with a single. In the fifth, Bogaars and Janet Venorsky hit solo home runs to give SLU a 5-0 lead. The Billikens put the game away with three runs in the seventh. Bohnenstiehl went the distance for the Billikens, striking out 10 and allowing just two hits.
After giving up two runs in the bottom of the first in game two, the Billikens came back with six unanswered runs en route to a 12-5 win. The Billikens scored two runs in the top of the second without a hit to tie the game. In the third, Jeffery began a four-run outburst with a single and stole second. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on May's single. May stole second and scored on Bohnenstiehl's double. Venorsky's double brought home Bohnenstiehl. Erin Jeffery added two.
The Billikens extend the best start in school history and improve to 10-1 on the season. Belmont falls to 4-16 on the year.
