The Saint Louis softball team won its first-ever game against Southern Miss in a doubleheader split in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Saturday. The Billikens won game one 1-0, but Southern Miss took game two 5-2. The Lady Eagles are the defending Conference USA champions and had won the previous nine meetings between the schools.
Former Lady Eagle Nicole Bohnenstiehl threw a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts to pick up the complete-game victory. SLU scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning. With two out, the Billikens had runners on the corners and pulled off a double steal. Freshman Adrienne May drew a throw from Southern Miss' catcher and Erin Jeffery sprinted home for the only run of game one.
In game two, the Billikens jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Bohnenstiehl's infield single scored Jeffery, and a Kalee Reichert's ground out scored May. Southern Miss earned one run back in the bottom of the first and tied the game in the second. The game remained tied until catcher Kenya Peters clubbed a solo home run and Melanie Hymel followed with a two-RBI double.
The Billikens are now 12-5, 1-4 in Conference USA play. Southern Miss is 13-14, 4-1 in C-USA. The teams finish the three-game series on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.
