St. Louis - The Louisville Cardinals swept a Conference USA softball doubleheader from the Saint Louis University Billikens on Thursday afternoon by scores of 4-0 and 8-5. Louisville improves to 14-15 on the season, 3-2 in Conference USA. The Billikens fall to 12-8 overall, 1-7 in C-USA.
In game one, the Cards tallied the only run they would need on a SLU error. Keola Calderon reached on a fielder's choice and took second on a wild pitch. On the play, Billiken third baseman Kerri Higgins attempted to throw Calderon out at second, but the ball sailed into centerfield. Calderon sprinted home for the 1-0 lead. The Billikens got the first two batters on in the bottom of the first but could not score, Erin Jeffery and Adrienne May singled, and Adrienne May had two hits for the Billikens.
The Billikens tallied four runs in the second inning, but saw the Cardinals rally for the win. Kerri Higgins singled Hubert in and took second on a Louisville error. Erin Jeffery reached on a fielder's choice and appeared to be caught in a rundown attempting to steal second. But Higgins ran in to score on the play for a 4-0 SLU lead. Lisa McMillan singled, was moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on Sara Bausher's RBI single. The Billikens got the run back when Bogaars drilled a solo homer to left field. The home run was the tenth of the season by the Billikens, a new school record.
Louisville strung together four straight hits in the fourth for a run, but exploded for five runs in the fifth. Kenzie Meisenburg singled and Bausher chased her home with a triple. A Keola Calderon single made it 5-3, and Louisville tied it on Lisa Estes triple to right center. Jodi Thomas singled up the middle to score Estes and hand the Cardinals a 6-5 lead. Louisville put the game away with two insurance runs in the sixth. Jessica Rak came on in relief in the second inning and picked up her second victory of the day. Rak struck out four in six innings, allowing just one earned run.
