Final Stats
St. Louis -
The East Carolina Pirates used one outburst in each game to take a Conference USA softball doubleheader from the Saint Louis University Billikens on Saturday. The Pirates claimed game one 4-1 and took game two 5-1.
The first contest saw ECU tally four runs in the second and limit the Bills to just one run the rest of the way to take the first-ever meeting between the schools. Beth Bridger led off the second with a single and stole second. Kate Manuse walked and a sac bunt put them both in scoring position. Brandi Benedict was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Amber Gill singled in the first run of the game. Angela Manzo followed with a two-run single, and a Billiken error led to the final ECU run. In the bottom of the third, Adrienne May and Adrienne May reached safely in all three of her at-bats for the Billikens.
After ECU took a 1-0 in the top of the first, the Pirated pushed across four runs in the third inning and moved on for a 5-1 triumph. Kirstin Johnson led off the third with a single and took second on a wild pitch. Kate Manuse drove her home with a single. After Stacey Smith singled, two straight walks pushed in a run for a 3-1 Pirates' lead. Brandi Benedict's single plated another run and an RBI ground out closed out the scoring. The Billikens out-hit ECU eight to six, but could not piece together enough offense. The lone Billiken tally came in the fifth. Jamie Hayden doubled with two outs and scored on Adirenne May's single and a throwing error by ECU. Laurie Davidson scattered seven hits and allowed just the one unearned run for the win.
The Billikens fall to 12-15 overall, 1-9 in Conference USA. East Carolina improves to 24-14 overall, 6-4 in C-USA.
