Final Stats
St. Louis -
The Saint Louis Billikens blanked Charlotte twice in Conference USA softball action on Saturday at The Billiken Sports Center. In both games, the Billikens scored the only runs in the bottom of the sixth to take 1-0 and 3-0 decisions. In game one, Nicole Bohnenstiehl broke the single-season RBI record with her 23rd on the year. The victories run the Billikens' winning streak to six games.
In game one, SLU starter Nicole Bohnenstiehl laced a grounder to second that Denise Atmar grabbed. Atmar threw home, but May slid around the tag at home to score the only run of the game. Bohnenstiehl's RBI was her 23rd on the season, breaking the previous mark of 22 set by Dawn Elser in 1987. In the top of the seventh, Atmar reached on an error and moved to second on a sac bunt by Lynne LaPorte. But Hubert struck out pinch hitter Kristen White to end the game. Hubert struck out three and picked up her 10th win of the season. Charlotte's best chance to score was in the fifth inning. The 49ers loaded the bases with one out with two singles and a hit batter. Atmar was forced out as Jamie Hayden threw home on a grounder for the second out. The threat ended on a fielder's choice when Nora Petrie was forced at second to end the inning.
Pitching was outstanding in game two as starters Nicole Bohnenstiehl and Amy Morse combined to allow only three hits through five innings. But the sixth inning again was Charlotte's undoing. Bohnenstiehl singled with two outs and Adrie Bogaars drew a walk. Jessica Saucedo pinch ran for Bohnenstiehl and scored on Beth Yagge's sharp single to left. Coach Jim Molloy went to another pinch runner when Cori Bittick ran for Bogaars. Janet Venorsky hit a double to left which grazed the left fielder's glove to score Bittick and Yagge for a 3-0 lead. Leah Heaston singled for Charlotte's second hit of the game to open the top of the seventh but was stranded there to end the game. Bohnenstiehl limited the 49ers to only two singles and did not allow a runner to reach third base in notching the win.
Morse gave up only five hits to the Billikens in working a complete game.
The Billikens improve to 19-19 overall, 3-12 in Conference USA. Charlotte falls to 18-23, 2-11 in C-USA. The teams finish the three-game series with a single contest at noon (CT) on Sunday.
