St. Louis -
Houston used a four-run third inning outburst and moved on for a 7-1 softball victory on Sunday at The Billiken Sports Center. The Cougars won the first and last games of the three-game Conference USA series.
The Billikens grabbed the early lead in the bottom of the first. Erin Jeffery singled and Kerri Higgins sacrificed her over to second. Beth Yagge flaired a ball to center to put runners on the corners. Billiken starter Nicole Bohnenstiehl doubled to left to score Jeffery for the first run of the game. However, the Billikens could not push across any more runs and settled for the one-run lead. In the top of the third, Kim Nesloney tripled to start the UH rally. Leslie Seay walked and a Netardus grounder tied the game 1-1. Ali McDougal singled to push Houston to a 2-1 lead. Kristen Glowacz tripled to plate two more for a 4-1 Cougar lead. The Billikens loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but were unable to tally any runs. Singles by Jeffery and Bohnenstiehl sandwiched a walk by Yagge to load the bases. Houston went to ace Jamie Falco to relieve starter Jenny Johnson. Falco notched a strikeout and induced a flyout to end the threat. The Cougars added three runs on two hits and a Billiken error in the top of the seventh. Falco then struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to end the game. Johnson threw 5-1/3 innings to post her 12 win, while Falco earned her first save of the season. Bohnenstiehl struck out nine batters but took the loss for SLU.
The Billikens drop to 21-23 overall, 5-14 in Conference USA. Houston improves to 30-20, 7-10 in C-USA.
