St. Louis, Mo. -
Saint Louis (1-10, 1-3 NorPac) dominated both ball and field possession in today's NorPac conference match with Davidson (7-6, 3-1 NorPac) claiming the team's first victory of the 2003 season. The victory was also Maria Whitehead's first victory as a Division I head coach.
"Overall, I was very happy with today's match and the players performance and intensity," Whitehead said. "The first 50 minutes of play showed me that the team applied what we worked on and talked about all week in practice. The last 20 minutes wasn't good enough, in my book. We let down our focus level and gave up an unnecessary goal. That goal was a perfect example of what happened earlier this season when we let our guard down. I'm glad to be back at home and to have our team earn this victory."
While the Billikens came out strong immediately, it was the Wildcats making the first score from Kathleen Fenn with 20:30 remaining in the first half. Billiken freshman Michelle Sinclair scored five minutes later with a clear and unassisted shot to the back of the pipes.
With the game tied one all at the half, the vocal crowd of Billiken faithful cheered on the team's good field play and seemed to enjoy the communication between the lines. Freshman Kristin Lueders fired a shot to the back of the net with eight minutes ticked off the clock. Senior forward Lindsay Lombardo netted what turned out to be the gamewinner four minutes after Lueder's goal.
Saint Louis showed a lack of intensity as the game drew on and allowed a goal by Davidson's Fenn with 10 minutes remaining to play. After Whitehead called a timeout, the Bills pace increased to that of first half play giving them a solid win over the tenacious Wildcats.
Sophomore keeper Julie Moeckel made nine saves with Davidson's Sarah Nolen making four. Each team earned six penalty corners on the day.
Saint Louis will face Pacific on Mon., Oct. 13, at Noon at the A-B Center in the second game of this five homestand series.
