Final Stats
St. Louis, Mo. -
Maria Whitehead's first NorPac Championship tournament almost proved to be the biggest upset of the day as the Billikens fought hard against the Bears from California. Saint Louis (3-15, 1-6) played a strong game against Cal (10-3, 7-0).
Cal outshot the Bills 21-6 and earned 16 penalty corners to the Bills' two. While the stats appeared to be lopsided, the play on the field did not. Julie Moeckel was outstanding in goal as she made 13 saves while Cal's Kelly Knapp only needed to make four.
"I'm very proud of our team's play today," said Coach Whitehead. "We played a very solid and focused 70 minutes of hockey. We were fired up for this tournament and I think the very cold temperatures helped us to stay on target throughout the match."
Cal got on the board first with a rebound shot off Nora Feddersen by Erin Booth with 19:45 to go in the first half. SLU returned the favor three minutes later when Kelly Hellenga tipped in a rebound shot and scored. Julie Gipner earned the gamewinning goal while 30 minutes remained on the game clock.
Saint Louis will face Appalachian State (11-8, 4-3) on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the consolation round. ASU was defeated in today's final match 2-1 by Stanford (5-12, 3-4).
