The Saint Louis softball team dropped its third straight game as Houston completed a series sweep with a 3-2 win on Monday night at Cougar Field. The series was the season opener for the Billikens after having their first 15 games cancelled due to inclement weather.
Houston took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After a Jaci Gonzalez single, Jeanie Davis launched a home run to put the Cougars up. Houston added another run in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman Ashley Heady singled to plate senior Beth Puttcamp for the Bills' first run of the game in the fifth inning. After Adrie Bogaars reached, she came around and scored on an Adrienne May single to pull the Billikens to 3-2. The Bills put a runner in scoring position in the sixth, but could not push across the game-tying run. Jenny Johnson came on in the seventh to preserve the win for Crystal Briscoe. Nicole Bohnenstiehl pitched a complete game, striking out six and allowing just four hits but suffered her second straight tough loss.
The Billikens fall to 0-3 on the season and are 0-3 in Conference USA play. Houston wins its eighth straight and improves to 18-10 overall, 6-0 in C-USA. The Billikens are next in action against Stephen F. Austin on Wed., March 12, in a doubleheader in Nagcodoches, Texas.
