Bills and Blazers Split Softball Twinbill

March 29, 2003

Final Stats

St. Louis - The Saint Louis University Billikens and UAB split a doubleheader in Conference USA softball action on Saturday at The Billiken Sports Center. The Billikens posted a 3-0 shutout in game one, while the Blazers returned the favor with a 10-0 blanking in the second game.

In the bottom of the second inning of game one, the Billikens tallied two runs on an errant pickoff throw by UAB. Adrienne May and Beth Puttcamp scored when Amanda Ellis' throw sailed into left center for the only runs the Billikens would need. In the third inning, Nicole Bohnenstiehl powered a pitch over the leftfield wall for her 11th career home run, breaking the previous mark of 10 set by Meredith Henry. The Blazers put runners in scoring position in both the fifth and sixth innings, but Bohnenstiehl worked out of trouble to preserve her 15th career shutout. She struck out nine UAB hitters to run her career total to 495 and picked up her sixth win of the season.

In game two, the Blazers tallied runs in the first four innings in the 10-0 decision. The Blazers drew five walks from Billiken starter Kristin Rossi and used a single to push across three runs in the first. After an RBI triple by Sara Christophel in the second, UAB put the game away with five runs in the third on four hits and a Billiken error. The Blazers tacked on a run in the fourth to complete the scoring. UAB had 10 hits in the game, tying the most hits the Billikens have surrendered this season. UAB starter Kelli Thompson had four strikeouts and allowed just two hits to pick up her eighth win.

The Billikens are now 8-8 overall, 5-6 in Conference USA. The Blazers are 17-17 overall, 2-6 in C-USA. The teams complete a three-game series with a single contest on Sun., March 30, in a 1 p.m. game.
