Final Stats
St. Louis -
Nicole Bohnenstiehl threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead the Saint Louis University softball team to a 1-0 win over UAB at The Billiken Sports Center on Sunday. Bohnenstiehl earned two shutout wins over the Blazers this weekend, allowing just four hits over 14 innings and finishing with 17 strikeouts. The win gives the Billikens six Conference USA wins, the most by the Billikens since softball became a league sport four seasons ago.
The Billikens tallied the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Ashlee Heady hit a ball that landed just between UAB second baseman Beth Mullins and centerfielder Sara Christophel for a double. After a Beth Yagge walk, Kalee Reichert hit a ball up the middle to score Heady. UAB threatened in the top of the sixth when Chelsea McCall reached on a wild pitch after striking out. She moved to second on a sac bunt, but Bohnenstiehl got the final two outs on the inning. In the bottom of the sixth, the Billikens had a chance to tack on an insurance run, but Heady was thrown out trying to score from first on an outstanding relay from the Blazers' Christophel to shortstop Candice Hithe, who threw to Amanda Ellis who applied the tag. In the top of the seventh for UAB, Kelli Thompson drew a walk, but Bohnenstiehl again worked out of the jam. She induced a popup to short by Kris Lara, and Ellis flew out to center to end the game. The lone hit Bohnenstiehl gave up was a double to Christophel in the third, and she allowed only four UAB baserunners. With the win, Bohnenstiehl runs her record to 7-4. During the game, she registered the 500th strikeout of her career and now has 503.
The Billikens improve to 9-8 overall, 6-6 in Conference USA. The Blazers dip to 17-18 overall, 2-7 in C-USA.
