April 1, 2003

Final Stats

Martin, Tenn. - The Saint Louis University softball team swept a doubleheader over UT-Martin on Tuesday in Martin, Tenn. The Billikens edged the Skyhawks 1-0 in game one and rallied in the seventh inning for a 5-4 win in game two.

UT-Martin pitcher Allison Buckley held the Billikens without a hit for six innings until freshman Ashlee Heady drilled a triple to right center to lead off the top of the seventh. After an infield out, Beth Yagge singled to short to score the only run of the game. SLU pitcher Nicole Bohnenstiehl also tossed a two-hitter and struck out nine to pick up the win. The last five Billiken wins have all come by shutout.

In game two, the Skyhawks built a 4-1 lead but the Billikens put on a stirring rally with four runs in the top of the seventh to edge out a 5-4 win. UT-Martin pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. In the fourth, Beth Yagge hit a ball to third, but it was misplayed for an error as Higgins and Quist scored to put the Bills up 5-4. Bohnenstiehl who relieved Kristin Rossi in the fifth, retired the bottom of the seventh in order for her ninth win of the year.

The Billikens improve to 11-8 on the season, while the Skyhawks fall to 13-14. The Billikens return to Conference USA play this weekend against No. 23 South Florida on Saturday at The Billiken Sports Center.
