Final Stats
St. Louis -
Saint Louis University and Southern Illinois split a pair of one-run games in softball action at The Billiken Sports Center on Thursday. Southern Illinois' Amy Harre threw a no-hitter as the Salukis edged the Billikens 1-0 in game one. The Billikens pushed across four runs in the bottom of the seventh and rallied for a 5-4 win in game two. In the second game, Nicole Bohnenstiehl came on in relief to win her 15th game, a SLU single-season record.
The Salukis got one hit in each of the first four innings of game one before finally breaking through in the top of the fifth. Kendra Moore singled with one out and moved to second on a sac bunt by Samantha Carter. Adie Viefhaus delivered the clutch two-out RBI single to score the lone run of the game for SIU. Saluki starter Amy Harre retired the first 11 Billikens before giving up a walk to Beth Yagge in the fourth. Melissa Quist reached on an error in the sixth, but was the only other baserunner for SLU. Harre had nine strikeouts in picking up her 19th win of the season.
In game two, the Salukis led 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, but the Billikens stunned SIU with four runs in their final at-bat. Renee Mueller gave up nine hits to the Billikens but left the game having given up just one run. Amy Harre came on to close out the Billikens, but instead gave up three straight hits. Nicole Bohnenstiehl doubled to right center to pull the Bills to 4-2. Ashlee Williams doubled to center and score Bohnenstiehl with the Billikens' third run. Ashlee Heady hit a ball to second base, but the Saluki's misplayed the ball, allowing Williams to tie the game 4-4 and Heady reach second. She took third on Adrie Bogaars' infield ground out. SIU's Harre threw an inside pitch that bounced in the dirt and got away from catcher Lauren Roney. Roney made a strong throw back to the plate, but Heady slid in just ahead of the tag for the winning run. Bohnenstiehl came on in relief of SLU starter Kristin Rossi, and had six strikeouts in 5-2/3 innings of work. In addition, she became the first Billiken to record four hits in the four-year history of The Billiken Sports Center and went four-for-four in the second game. The Billikens had their second-best hitting day with 12 hits in the game.
The Billikens are now 18-15 while the Salukis are 32-8. The Billikens host their final home games of the season on Mon., April 28, when Bradley visits for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
