Bohnenstiehl throws one-hitter in 4-1 win against UT-Martin

St. Louis - Nicole Bohnenstiehl had a no-hitter for 6-2/3 innings before settling for a one-hitter in a 4-1 victory over Tennessee-Martin in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday. Kristin Rossi and Bohnenstiehl combined on a four-hit 2-0 shutout in the second game. During game two, Bohnenstiehl moved into a tie for first place on the all-time Billiken RBI list with 65. The Billikens improve to 13-10 overall, while the Skyhawks fall to 15-18 on the year.

In the first game, Bohnenstiehl was dominating with 16 strikeouts, one short of her career high. UT-Martin's first runner reached on a wild pitch after a strikeout with two outs in the third inning. Bohnenstiehl retired the next 11 hitters without surrendering a hit. She struck out the leadoff hitter in the top of the seventh, but UT-Martin's Meredith Ramsey's reached on a SLU fielding error. Ramsey stole second, and Bohnenstiehl struck out Nicole Davis for the second out of the inning. However, the no-hitter was spoiled when Kristin Runyan flared a 1-2 pitch into short centerfield for the only Skyhawk hit and run of the game. Bohnenstiehl retired Jennifer Young on a grounder for the final out of the game. The Billikens scored three runs in the third inning when Melissa Quist had an RBI single, and Kerri Higgins followed with a double to plate two more runs. Bohnenstiehl launched a solo home run in the fifth to close out the Billiken scoring. Bohnenstiehl had outstanding control and did not walk a batter.

In game two, the Billikens jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Bohnenstiehl singled in Kristin Rossi shut UT-Martin out for four innings and gave up just three hits. Bohnenstiehl came on in relief in the fifth inning and struck out eight of the 10 batters she faced to pick up her second save on the season and preserve Rossi's third win. The Billikens added an insurance run in the sixth when Adrie Bogaars had a single to score Beth Yagge. In the doubleheader, Bohnenstiehl notched 24 strikeouts in 10 innings of work.
