Saint Louis' Field Hockey Team Downed 1-0 by Appalachian State

Sept. 2, 2003

Final Stats

Boone, N.C. - Saint Louis (0-3, 0-2 NorPac) goalkeeper sophomore Julie Moeckel (St. Louis, Mo. / Ladue) put on an impressive performance today allowing only one goal against Appalachian State's (3-0, 2-0 NorPac) tough forward line in the losing effort. Moeckel made nine of 10 saves today and 13 in the previous two games against Appalachian State and Virginia Commonwealth.

ASU kept pressure on the Billikens' defense for a majority of the second half. Mountaineer turnovers resulted in five quick scoring chances over the final 35 minutes of action for the Bills. Sophomore keeper Kate Ryno blocked all five preserving ASU's victory.

The lone goal of the afternoon came just inside the second half's start (29:13). Lizzie Watson earned the assist on her pass to Muschamp, who made the most of the opportunity.

Head coach Maria Whitehead, although disappointed in ending the road trip 0-3, was impressed with her Billikens. "As a whole, the team came out and played well. We have some things to work on after the season's early games, but we have identified those now. Our folks are stepping up and, after a few more practices on our home turf, we should be fine."

ASU installed a new Sporturf field just prior to the start of the 2003 season. Sporturf is a long and thick bladed artificial surface compared with the Billikens' home field quickness at the Anheuser-Busch Center. "We need to work on adjusting our game to such different field surfaces," said Whitehead, "along with honing our skills.

"Ellen Rapp (St. Louis, Mo. / Ursuline) had an outstanding series," Whitehead noted. Rapp leads the team with seven shots and made some outstanding plays. Our junior transfer Marissa Lynn (Aurora, Colo. / St. Francis) also had a very productive road trip. Seniors Lindsay Lombardo (St. Louis, Mo. / Nerinx Hall) and Alisa Hebert (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) have done a great job in leading the team's play on the field. I am pleased with our play and content in identifying our challenges so early on."

Saint Louis continues its road swing with a pair of matches in Louisville, Ky., against UMass and Boston University next Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
