Greenville, N.C. -
East Carolina's Paige Baggett hit a grand slam in the first inning to lead the Pirates to a 7-0 win over the Saint Louis Billikens in the Conference USA softball opener for both teams. Game two of the doubleheader was postponed until tomorrow due to weather.
The Billikens were held to just three hits as their offensive was kept in check by ECU starter Keli Harrell. Adrienne May led off the game with a hit, but she was stranded on the basepaths. The Pirates scored five runs in the first for all the offense they would need. The Billikens put two runners on in the sixth but that was as close as they would get to a run. SLU starter Lorena Floccari gave up just one earned run but was handed the loss.
The Billikens fall to 3-6 on the season, 0-1 in C-USA. The Pirates are now 23-4, 1-0 in the league. The teams will play two games tomorrow, starting at 11 a.m. (CT).
