The Saint Louis Billikens and UAB Blazers split a Conference USA softball doubleheader on Friday at The Billiken Sports Center. The Billikens edged the Blazers 2-0 in the first game, while UAB claimed the second contest 11-1.
The Billikens jumped on top with the only two runs of the game in the third frame. Katie Hoffarth led off with a double to left center and took second on Adrienne May's bunt single. May then took second on a UAB wild pitch. The Billikens tried to squeeze in a run, but the Blazers threw the ball away as Hoffarth sprinted home with the game's first run. AshLeigh Williams singled to left to bring home May for a 2-0 Bills' lead. SLU starter Lorena Floccari surrendered only three hits en route to her fourth shutout of the season. She notched three strikeouts in the game and gave up only one hit after the third inning.
In game two, the Blazers took advantage of two SLU errors and strung together four hits for three runs in the first inning. UAB tallied another run in the second on a triple by Chelsea McCall for a four-run lead. The Blazers scored three unearned when Leigh Walker hit a ball over the leftfield fence for a 7-0 UAB lead. The Billikens got on the board in the third when Adrienne May's. Carrie Christophel got the run back for UAB with an RBI single, before Walker struck again. With the bases loaded, she hit a two-run double to put away the game for the Blazers.
The Billikens are now 11-16 overall, 4-8 in C-USA. The Blazers are 16-25, 3-8 in the league. The teams will play a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
