The Saint Louis Billikens scored five runs in each game as they swept a doubleheader at Western Illinois on Tuesday afternoon. The Bills took game one 5-3, then held off WIU 5-4 in the second tilt.
Adrienne May walked to start the top of the first and promptly stole second. Ashlee Heady worked a walk to put two on, but the next two Billikens made outs. However, Logan Justice lashed a two-run double to put the Bills on top. Western Illinois pushed across a run in the third, but the Billikens responded with a single runs in each of the last three innings.
In the fifth, May tripled, and Heady drove her in with a double for a 3-1 SLU lead. Western Illinois' Jess Stanforth nailed a solo home run to draw the Westerwinds to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning. After Beth Schomaker drew a leadoff walk, Kristi Rasnic pinch run for the senior. Rasnic moved up a base on a passed ball, and she scored on May's RBI single to right center.
The Billikens sealed the win in the seventh. Kara Sell led off with a walk, and AshLeigh Williams doubled in the fifth run of the game for the Billikens. Western drew to 5-3 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but SLU starter Lorena Floccari retired Amber Lessen to end the game. Floccari picked up her eighth win of the season.
The Bills built an early lead and held on for the sweep. Adrienne May began a three-run first inning with a single. She moved up a base on a wild pitch, and reached third after an Ashlee Heady sac bunt. A WIU error brough home May, and Beth Schomaker RBI single scored AshLeigh Williams. Allison Appenfeller's single up the middle handed the Billikens a 3-0 advantage.
Western Illinois scored an unearned run to trim the margin to 3-1. The Bills used their power to take a 5-1 lead in the third. Logan Justice tripled to begin the frame, and Lorena Floccari ended the WIU rally in the seventh as the Billikens moved to 13-17 on the year. Western Illinois fell to 12-15 and suffered its third straight loss.
