ST. LOUIS - The visiting Temple Owls topped Saint Louis 12-0 in five innings in an Atlantic 10 Conference softball matchup Saturday afternoon at The Billiken Sports Center. Temple plated nine runs on eight hits in the top of the fifth to break the game open. The loss dips SLU to 23-30 overall and 8-7 in the A-10, while Temple jumps ahead of the Billikens for third in the conference standings at 15-17 overall, 8-6 in the A-10.
SLU starter Lorena Floccari had to sharp early in working around an error and a walk in the top of the first. With runners on second and third with just one down, the junior hurler got a flyout and a groundout to get out of the jam.
The Owls' Anna Rico put Temple up 1-0 in the top of the second with a solo home run. She sent Floccari's one-out pitch over the right field fence for her second homer of the season, and gave Temple the lead for the first time in the two-game series.
Temple loaded the bases in the top of the third, but the Billikens limited the damage by allowing just one run. Jessica Rohn doubled down the right field line, then a walk to Adrienne Repsher and a base knock by Katherin Burdeaux loaded the bases. Krystal Metzler ripped a ball to short that was corralled by SLU's Brittney Schmidt, but Rohn scored on the play to make it 2-0 Owls.
SLU let an opportunity slip away in the bottom of the third. Schmidt stroked a one-out double down the left field line, but Owls starter Brianna Dairy retired the next two batters to eliminate the scoring chance.
Natalie Wagner made it 3-0 on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth. In the bottom half of the inning, SLU freshman Nicki Jost led off with a single. Senior Christy Ernst then smashed a shot to left center, but Temple successfully executed the relay and gunned down Jost trying to score.
Temple broke the game open in the top of the fifth off releiver Stacy Gillette. Courtney Norene got it started with an RBI single, then Rico drove in a run on a squeeze play. Nicole Lee and Amanda Carver had back-to-back RBI singles, and Adrienne Repsher crushed a bases-loaded, three-run double. Brittany Burks capped the big inning with a two-run home run, her first homer of the season.
Temple starter Brianna Dairy, who pitched against the Billikens for the second straight day, allowed no runs on just four hits in the five innings. She struck out six and walked none.
Jost, Ernst, freshman Shana Richard and Schmidt had hits for SLU.
The Billikens return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Saint Joseph's. SLU's four seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony beginning at 10:40 a.m. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
