Turmail Lifts Billikens Past Belmont, 3-0

Feb. 23, 2008

Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Saint Louis junior right-hander Scott Turmail (Florissant, Mo. / Hazelwood Central) tossed a four-hit complete-game shutout to lift the Billikens to a 3-0 victory against Belmont at Greer Stadium on Saturday. The win was the first of the season for SLU and its new head coach Darin Hendrickson.

Turmail, who transferred to the Billikens from Long Beach State, made his first start in a Billiken uniform a memorable one. He worked around an error in the first inning, retired the side in the second and allowed his first hit - a double to Carlo Testa who was later picked off at second by Turmail - in the third inning.

Belmont managed a hit in the fifth and an infield single in the seventh, but otherwise Turmail was flawless on the hill. He would allow a leadoff single in the ninth inning, but a game-ending double play sealed the win for the Billikens (1-1). Turmail (1-0) struck out three batters on the afternoon and walked none.

Saint Louis plated the only run it would need in the fifth. Sophomore Andrew Guerra (Dallas, Texas) stroked a leadoff single to left, and advanced to second on a Greg Rodgers (St. Charles, Mo. / Francis Howell) walk. Junior Tom Pinnell (Edwardsville, Ill. / Edwardsville) then drove in Guerra with a single to left center to give the Bills a 1-0 lead.

Turmail would get some breathing room in the sixth as SLU plated an insurance run. Brandon Parsons (Stow, Ohio / Stow Munroe Falls) walked, and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by J.D. Dunn (Franklin, Tenn. / Centennial). Pinnell drove in SLU's third run in the ninth inning with a one-out single, plating Dunn who earlier reached on an error.

Ziggy Moore (Lake St. Louis, Mo. / Wentzville Holt) went 2-for-4, including a triple, to match Pinnell's team-high two hits. Overall, Saint Louis out-hit the Bruins 6-4. Brian Kelley was charged with the loss for Belmont.

Saint Louis and Belmont return for the rubber game of the three-game series tomorrow. First pitch from Greer Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
