CARBONDALE, Ill. - Freshman Kalie Kirk and junior Justin Kwasa broke school records Saturday at the SASF Invitational in Carbondale, Ill.
Kirk posted school records in two events, the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles. She finished the 60-meter dash in a new school-record time of 8.05, breaking Tiffany Alexander's mark set last season. Kirk also improved her own 60-meter hurdles time in the prelims, crossing the line in 8.82. She ended up finishing fifth overall in the finals. Kirk has now broken the school record in the 60-meter hurdles in three-straight meets.
Kwasa bettered his own mark in the shot put with a heave of 12.62 meters. He also participated in the weight throw, placing seventh with a toss of 17.48 meters.
Also achieving a school record on the day was the Billikens' 4x400-meter relay squad, comprised of Kirk, Maddie O'Quinn, Alexander and Sara Fraley. The quartet finished sixth overall with a time of 4:01.54.
Additional strong performances for the Billikens included O'Quinn's showing in the 800 meters. She won the event with a time of 2:18.12, which was just two-tenths of a second off the SLU school record. Hilary Orf placed second in the mile with a season-best time of 5:07.45.
Dahmar Smiles qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles and ended up placing third overall with a time of 8.33.
The Billikens return to action next Saturday, Jan. 23, when they travel to Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., for the Gladstein Invitational.
