For the first time since Saint Louis joined the Atlantic 10 Conference, the Billikens dropped a volleyball match to George Washington 3-1 Sunday afternoon at the Smith Center in Washington, D.C. Set scores for the Colonials were 26-24, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18. During the match, senior Megan Boken topped the 1,000-digs mark for her career.
The Colonials tallied the first three points of the match before Megan Boken terminated to bring the Billikens to 5-2, but GW inched out to a five-point lead. The Billikens trailed 11-6 before stunning GW with seven straight points. Hannah Kvitle served two consecutive aces. After Beaty and Carly Schumacher recorded a block, Kvitle recorded her third ace as the Billikens surged to a 13-11 lead. GW eventually tied the set at 14-14, but SLU responded with a Beaty kill and Schumacher and Carly Marcum teamed for a block and a 16-14 Billiken margin. The Colonials cut their deficit to one before SLU stretched its advantage to 23-19. However, the Billiken attack was unable to compile any more points as SLU took the set 26-24.
The Billikens enjoyed a narrow lead at the start of set two before GW tied the set at 8-8. The set was still tied at 10-10 before the Colonials scored three straight to take their largest lead. SLU scored three straight points when Emma Goldschmidt's kill sparked the run. She and Beaty had a block as the Billikens edged to within two points as 20-18. SLU was unable to close the gap as GW held on to take a 2-0 lead.
Set three was close throughout as neither team led by more than two points. The set was tied 12 times, the last occurring as 20-20 before the Billikens used a three-point burst to move out to a 23-20 lead. Deno started the run with a kill and two straight GW errors put the Billikens on top 23-20. The Colonials cut the gap to 24-23, but they committed an error at set point as the Billikens extended the match 25-23.
The Billikens looked to build on their momentum in set four but it was GW that broke a 2-2 deadlock and pushed out to a 9-2 advantage. The Colonials committed a hitting error to break the Billikens' drought. SLU still trailed 16-10 before making one final run. Beaty and Boken traded four straight kills, but GW steadied itself and rebuilt a five-point lead and did not allow SLU to close the gap and hold on for the win.
For the second straight match, Boken and Deno both recorded double-doubles. Boken had a team-high 14 kills to go with 14 digs, while Deno was second on the team with 13 kills and also finished with 14 kills. Kvitle enjoyed a tremendous overall match with 46 assists, a team-high 18 digs, five service aces and four kills.
The Billikens see their record move to 7-9 overall, 2-2 in the A-10. The Colonials improve to 13-7, 2-1 in the league.
