Box Score
ST. LOUIS - Everyone in the Saint Louis starting lineup recorded at least one hit as the Billikens rolled to a 13-4 victory over Temple Sunday in Atlantic 10 Conference baseball action at The Billiken Sports Center. The win completes the series sweep of the Owls after the Bills claimed 5-4 and 6-1 victories in games one and two.
The Billikens improve to 18-15 overall, 6-3 in the A-10, while Temple falls to 3-24, 1-8 in the league. SLU, which plays its next six conference games on the road, returns to action Wednesday in a non-conference tilt at SIU Edwardsville. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
SLU junior third baseman Ben Braaten went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and senior center fielder J.D. Dunn also drove in a pair of runs. Senior first baseman Danny Brock blasted his league-leading 13th home run of the season and scored twice.
Sophomore right-hander Andrew Buckham and junior right-hander Tommy Coovert combined to shutout the Owls over the last two innings to secure the victory.
Temple went on top 2-0 in the top of the second before the SLU offense went to work with three runs in both the third and fourth innings. Sophomore second baseman Lucas Calderon started the third with an infield single, and later ended up on third with one out. After junior left fielder Cody Cotter walked and stole a base, Dunn drove in both Calderon and Cotter with a single up the middle to tie the game at 2-2. Dunn stole second and third, and the aggressive base running paid off as he trotted home on a passed ball to give SLU a 3-2 lead, one it would not relinquish.
In the fourth, sophomore designated hitter Zach Miller and freshman right fielder Steve Fernandez drew walks. Then with two outs, Cotter ripped a triple over the center fielder's head to plate two. Cotter ended up scoring on the play on an error to give the Billikens a 6-2 advantage.
Temple cut its deficit to 6-3 in the top of the fifth, but SLU got that run back in the bottom half of the inning. Brock led off the inning with his 13th blast of the season, driving a Temple pitch over the left-field wall to make it 7-3.
The Owls scored again in the sixth to make it 7-4, and that remained the score until the bottom of the seventh when SLU broke it open with five runs to make it a 12-4 lead. Brock began the rally with a walk, and Myers singled. Both runners came around to score on a Braaten two-run double. Braaten came home on a Miller single to make it 10-4. Freshman second baseman David Blackwell also posted RBIs to give SLU a 12-4 advantage.
Myers cracked his 10th home run in the bottom of the eighth, a shot to left-center field, to complete the scoring for the Billikens.
