May 14, 2010

Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Saint Louis dropped an 11-7 decision at Charlotte Friday in the opener of a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference baseball series at Hayes Stadium.

The Billikens (26-24, 12-10 A-10) and the first-place 49ers (33-13, 16-6 A-10) will go at it again tomorrow at 1 p.m. (CT).

Senior Danny Brock was one of three Billikens with two hits. He also drove in a run to tie the SLU single-season RBI record at 67. Jon Myers had two hits and is now just three shy of the single-season hits record. Cody Cotter contributed to a four-run second inning with a three-run home run, his second homer of the year.

The Billikens went up 5-0 after scoring once in the first and four times in the second inning. With two outs in the first, Brock doubled to left and scored on a Myers double, putting the Billikens up 1-0.

SLU scored all four of its runs in the second with two outs. Ben Braaten led off with a single to right, and J.D. Dunn followed with a single, and stole second. Brock knocked Dunn in with a base hit to left to give the Billikens a 5-0 advantage.

However, Charlotte would score the next six runs of the ballgame after pushing across two in the second and four in the fourth.

SLU plated a run in the fifth. With one out, Zach Miller singled to left, and Braaten reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Fernandez put a ball in play that scored Miller, tying the score at 6-6.

The 49ers, who lead the A-10 in offense, scored four more times in the bottom of the fifth to post a lead that stood the rest of the way.

The Billikens plated a run in the seventh when Brock scored on a Braaten RBI groundout, but Charlotte answered with a run in the bottom-half of the inning for the 11-7 final.

Andrew Buckham (1-4) took the loss, while reliever Jim Foster pitched the final four innings, allowing just one run on two hits.
