Box Score

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Saint Louis junior third baseman Jon Myers recorded two hits to eclipse the SLU single-season record, but the Billikens fell 16-5 at Southern Illinois Tuesday in non-conference baseball action at Abe Martin Field.

The Billikens dip to 26-27 overall, while the Salukis improve to 26-26.

Saint Louis welcomes Dayton to The Billiken Sports Center later this week for a key Atlantic 10 Conference baseball series. Game one of the series is set for Thursday at 7 p.m., with game two slated for 1 p.m. Friday. Saturday's series finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.

Myers' two hits gives him 82 for the season, breaking Mike Barger's school record of 81 set back in 1993. Myers stroked a two-run single in the fifth to tie the mark, then registered a one-out base knock in the seventh to set the record.

Jerry Mancuso led the offense with three hits, while Levine joined Myers with two hits in the ballgame. Myers also lifted a sacrifice fly and finished with three RBIs.

Seven pitchers saw action for the Billikens. Jon Levin (0-1) was tagged with the loss after yielding three runs in the sixth.

Southern Illinois took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first before SLU got on the board with two runs in the third. Mancuso and Levine both reached on singles, and J.D. Dunn reached on a fielder's choice that scored Mancuso, making it a 1-1 game. Myers gave SLU the lead when he lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Levine, making it 2-1.

SIU regained the lead with four runs in the bottom-half of the third to make it 5-2, but SLU tied it up in the top of the fifth. Cotter led off with a single, and pinch-hitter Andrew Guerra and Danny Brock both reached after being hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Myers belted a single to left to score two. Zach Miller later reached on an RBI fielder's choice to knot the game at 5-5.

But Southern Illinois would go on to score the next 11 runs in the ballgame, beginning with a four-run sixth inning and punctuated with a six-run eighth, to cruise to the win. SIU leading hitter Chris Serritella had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a homer, two doubles, four runs scored and five RBIs. Lee Weld picked up the win after pitching two innings of shutout baseball.
