Cloudy, Smiles Win Conference Titles

AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomores Brittney Cloudy and Dahmar Smiles each won conference titles Sunday at the Atlantic 10 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Amherst, Mass.

Cloudy, the two-time defending champion in the triple jump in indoor, captured her first outdoor title Sunday following a leap of 40-11.5.

Smiles claimed the first conference title of his career in the 110-meter hurdles, posting a school-record time of 14.02. He also finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.79.

Cloudy and Smiles helped the women's and men's squads to ninth-place showings, the Billikens' best finish since the program's inception.

Also scoring the men's team was Mark Zimmer, who improved his own school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.35, which was good for fourth overall. He also turned in an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter dash.

Justin Kwasa, who yesterday finished fourth and eighth in the hammer and discus, respectively, completed his A-10 Championships with a 10th-place finish in the shot put. The men's 4x100-meter relay placed fourth with a school-record time of 41.80.

On the women's side, Kalie Kirk enjoyed a strong A-10 Championship in her freshman year. She finished third in the 110-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 14.15. Kirk also placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles, posting another school record with a time of 1:02.22.

Tiffany Alexander placed seventh in the 400-meter dash with a new school-record time of 56.60. The women's 4x100-meter relay placed sixth with a school-record time of 47.70.
