ST. LOUIS - Freshman Danny Brock broke the SLU single-season RBI record in a 3-1 Billiken victory over Dayton Thursday night in the opener of a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference baseball series at The Billiken Sports Center.
SLU (27-27, 13-12 A-10) moves into a three-way tie for the sixth spot in the A-10 standings, while Dayton dips to 23-30, 12-13 in the league. The Billikens and Flyers, who are both still alive for one of six spots in next week's A-10 Tournament in Camden, N.J., continue their series tomorrow with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
Alemann moves to 8-5 with the victory, one shy of the SLU single-season wins record. He allowed one run on eight hits, struck out a career-high nine and walked just one.
Brock recorded his 68th RBI of the season - the eventual game-winning RBI - in the third. He moves past Troy Hausladen, who drove in 67 runs in 1996, at the top of SLU chart.
The Billikens struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Andrew Guerra bunt. Following a Brock walk, Jon Myers stroked a one-out single through the left side to put the Billikens up early.
SLU added to its lead in the third when Guerra drove a one-out double to left center. Brock then singled back up the middle to score Guerra to make it 2-0 Billikens.
A two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth put SLU ahead 3-0. Jerry Mancuso tripled down the right-field line, and Mike Levine knocked him in with a single to right to give the Billikens a three-run cushion after four.
Dayton scored in the top of the fifth on a Joe Gayda RBI base knock, but that was the only run the Flyers would muster off of Alemann.
UD had a runner stranded at first in the seventh, and SLU catcher Ben Braaten picked a runner at first to end the eighth. Alemann worked a one-two-three ninth inning to secure the win for the Billikens.
Guerra had two hits to lead SLU, while Zach Jacob and Mitchell Nelson had two hits for the Flyers. Cameron Hobson (4-5) pitched well but was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits in eight innings of work.
Bryant Cotton (8-4) will be looking to tie the SLU single-season wins mark tomorrow as he gets the start for the Billikens. Dayton will counter with Burny Mitchem.
