Box Score ST. LOUIS - Andrea Beaty registered a match-high
21 kills, but Dayton edged Saint Louis 25-22, 25-19, 28-26 Sunday afternoon in
the Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season finale at Chaifetz Arena.
Beaty hit .410 for the match, committing just five errors in 39 attack
attempts. Carly Marcum had eight
kills and a .316 hitting efficiency (8-2-19). Defensively, Grace Bonoma led the Billikens (14-11, 10-5 A-10) with 19 digs,
followed by Alyssa Deno with 11 and Cassie Clarke with 10. Clarke added 34
assists.
The Billikens finished third in the A-10 standings and will play a
first-round match Friday in the A-10 Championship at Dayton. The opponent and
time will be announced later.
Dayton (22-6, 14-1 A-10), the A-10 regular-season champion, got 19
kills and 11 digs from Rachel Krabacher, 12 kills from Megan Campbell, 23 digs
from Paige Vargas, 10 digs and 38 assists from Samantha Selsky and five blocks
from Isolde Hannan.
The Flyers jumped out to a 7-1 lead in set one and appeared to be on their
way to an easy victory. However, the Billikens gradually chipped away and
eventually pulled to within two points on two occasions, 23-21 and 24-22,
before Dayton secured the set.
UD again raced to a quick start in set two, building a 6-0 cushion. The
Billikens could draw no closer than four, and the Flyers took a 2-0 lead in the
match.
After Saint Louis took an 8-4 advantage in set three, Dayton used a 4-0
run to pull even. Four more ties ensued before a 4-0 spurt gave the Billikens a
16-12 lead. The Flyers bounced back with an 8-3 flurry to pull ahead 20-19, and,
after SLU tied it at 20, scored four of the next five points to take a 24-21
edge.
However, a kill by Lauren Baumet,
a Dayton attack error and two Beaty kills put Saint Louis in front 25-24.
Dayton earned ties at 25 and 26 before taking the set and the match.
