ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis junior
forward Kim Bee netted a career-high 10 points and junior forward Mallory
Eggert recorded her second straight double-double as the Billikens rolled
to a 73-51 victory over Missouri-St. Louis Tuesday in women's basketball action
at Chaifetz Arena.
Bee's 11 points came
on 5-of-12 shooting from the field. She also corralled seven rebounds. Eggert
registered 11 points and 11 boards for her second double-double in a row and
the fourth of her career. Junior guard Jacy Bradley had a
team-high-tying 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor. She also dished
out four assists to tie senior guard Janisha Gearlds for team-high
honors. Sophomore forward Lorreal Jones had nine rebounds.
SLU, which recorded
its season scoring high for a second consecutive outing, improved to 4-6
overall with its second win in a row. The Billikens shot 41 percent for the game,
which included a 54.5 percent clip in the second half, for their second
straight effort above 40 percent. Saint Louis out-rebounded UMSL (4-4) 59-36,
including 25 offensive boards.
Caitlyn Moody (10 points) and Devonna Smith (eight rebound) led UMSL.
"For the kids to come
out and stay poised and focused and maintain their intensity for 40 minutes
when they're in the midst of studying for (final) exams, I couldn't be more
pleased as a coach," head coach Shimmy
Gray-Miller said.
"I continue to be
impressed with the maturity and growth we've shown in such a short period of
time," Gray-Miller said. "(We're) taking care of the ball, distributing the
ball and really valuing our possessions on the offensive end."
In addition to their
season-high point total, the Billikens registered season bests of 32 field
goals, 19 assists and 10 steals. SLU committed just 12 turnovers and tallied
more assists than turnovers for a second consecutive game.
The Billikens were up
by nine at halftime and led by double digits most of the second half. A 6-0 run
early in the second frame, constructed by a pair of buckets by Bee and a jumper
from Bradley, gave SLU a 45-31 advantage with 15 minutes remaining. The Bills
manufactured another 6-0 run several minutes later thanks to consecutive
baskets by Jenna Mueller and a jumper by Bradley.
UMSL trimmed its
deficit to 15 with 10 minutes remaining before the Billikens went on a 9-1 run,
putting the Bills on top 63-40. The Billikens would protect their 20-point
advantage the rest of the way and cruised to the 22-point win.
The Billikens took a
nine-point lead into halftime thanks in part to a seven-point, eight-rebound
effort by Eggert in the opening half. The squads traded baskets early on before
SLU went on an 11-0 run, ignited by a Bee layup and capped by a Bradley trey. Desirae
Ball had a pair of baskets in the scoring spree, and Eggert converted a
layup.
UMSL responded to cut
its deficit to three at 17-14 midway through the first session, then SLU went
on a 12-2 spurt to go on top by 13 with 3:29 remaining in the half. Courtney
Webb hit a pair of free throws, Bee hit a runner and Webb laid one in.
Following a Triton basket, Eggert and Bradley had layups and Jamesia Price
hit a free throw to give the Billikens a double-digit lead late in the half. Ball
had a game-high eight points at the break.
The Billikens
continue their three-game homestand Sunday, Dec. 18, when they welcome Drake to
Chaifetz Arena. Tip time is slated for 2 p.m.
