Saint Louis erupted for five runs in both the third and fourth innings and rolled past Southeast Missouri State 14-8 Tuesday evening at Capaha Field in Cape Girardeau, Mo. The Billikens pounded out three home runs, two by Jon Myers, and recorded a season-high 20 hits in the victory.
The Billikens took a 1-0 in the top of the first when Cody Cotter doubled, moved up a base on a fly out and scored on Nick Becker's sac fly. The Redhawks answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning.
However, SLU cranked up the offense in the third when they pushed across five runs. C.J. Rose delivered a two-run single to push SLU's advantage to 6-1.
SEMO cut into its deficit with two runs in the bottom of the third, but the Billikens tacked on another five-run outburst in the fourth to take control. Becker scored on a SEMO error, and Travis Parker followed with an RBI groundout. Hammerman and Rose again delivered RBI singles to boost the Billikens to a 10-3 lead. Becker delivered again as SLU's lead jumped to 11-3.
Both teams added a run in the sixth. SLU scored when Jordan Hammerman launched a solo home run. The Redhawks could only muster single-run innings later, but the Billikens closed out the contest with two runs in the top of the ninth. Myers jacked his second homer of the contest, and Zach Miller tallied SLU's final run on a passed ball. Zack Smith picked up the win, his third on the year, for the Billikens.
The Billikens improve to 14-6 on the season, and the Redhawks tumble to 11-10. SLU begins Atlantic 10 Conference action with a three-game series against Saint Joseph's at Campbell's Field in Camden, N.J.
