ST.
LOUIS - The Saint Louis Billikens captured their 12th
consecutive victory in dramatic fashion Saturday afternoon, scoring two runs in
the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Temple
2-1 at the Billiken
Sports Center.
A walk-off single off the bat of Alex Kelly gave the Billikens an 18-5 overall record and a 2-0
Atlantic 10 Conference mark. Temple
fell to 10-13, 0-2.
Pinch hitter Mike
Vigliarolo led off the ninth with a double down the right-field line. In
addition to putting the tying run in scoring position, Vigliarolo broke up Temple freshman
left-hander Patrick Peterson's no-hitter. Peterson, who then was lifted from
the game, struck out 10 and walked only one.
Alec Sole followed with a bunt single that moved pinch
runner Jordan Hammerman to third. After Sole advanced to second on a wild
pitch, Mike Levine walked to load
the bases.
Marco DiRoma
delivered a single to left that chased Hammerman home with the tying run, and
Kelly followed with his game-winning hit.
SLU starter Clay
Smith turned in a pitching gem of his own. Smith gave up just one run on
seven hits in 8 1/3 innings of work. He fanned eight and walked one. Nick Bates (2-0), who came on with
runners at first and second in the ninth, struck out the final two Temple batters and earned
the win.
Smith struck out three through the first two innings but ran
into a bit of trouble in the third.
Temple
recorded back-to-back hits to set up a scoring opportunity in the third inning.
The Owls attempted a double steal, but Billiken catcher Connor Gandossy threw a missile to second base to snag the second
out, and a strikeout ended the threat.
Alec Sole broke
up Peterson's perfect game in the sixth inning by coaxing a seven-pitch walk,
but the Billikens were unable to score.
In the eighth, Temple
got a one-out double down the left-field line from Jabair Khan. On the next
pitch, Foster Dunigan laced an RBI single to center field to put the Owls up
1-0.
Saint
Louis looks for the series
sweep Sunday at noon.
