ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis fell 3-2 in 13 innings against
Saint Joseph's Thursday night in Atlantic 10 Conference baseball action at The
Billiken Sports Center.
With the
loss, the Billikens dip to 21-8 overall and 5-2 in the A-10. Saint Joseph's
improves to 10-20, 2-2 in the league. The teams meet against tomorrow at 6 p.m.
at The BSC.
Saint
Joseph's scored the eventual winning run on a wild pitch in the top of the
13th. The Hawks had runners at the corners with two outs when SLU hurler Nick
Bates' pitch got away, allowing pinch-runner Tim Craig to score.
The
Billikens looked to have gotten that run back in the bottom half of the 13th. SLU's
Matt Adomowicz reached on an error to start the inning. C.J. Rose then laced a
double to the warning track in center, but a SJU relay ended up throwing out Adomowicz,
who was attempting to score from first. Rose was later stranded on second on a
strikeout and a fly out by Hawks reliever Lansing Veeder to end the game.
SJU opened
the scoring in the top of the fifth when Veeder tripled and Brian O'Keefe
knocked him in with a single, making it 1-0 Hawks.
That
remained the score until the bottom of the sixth. Alex Kelly and Grant Nelson
singled, and the two eventually found themselves in scoring position. Mike
Vigliarolo brought them both home with a double to left, giving SLU a 2-1
advantage after six.
The lead
was short-lived, however, as Saint Joseph's tied it up the very next inning
when O'Keefe again drove in a run with a single. A pitcher's duel ensued as the
teams played five scoreless innings before SJU plated the winning run in the
13th.
Alex Alemann started on the mound for SLU and tossed an effective
6.1 innings. He allowed two runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked
none. James Norwood threw 2.2 innings and allowed one run on one hit. Travis
Parker went 3.2 innings of shutout baseball while striking out five.
Mike Levine paced the offense with three hits, while Marco
DiRoma had two hits and extended his on-base streak to 19 games.
