HAMMOND, La. - Jessica Van Nostrand
had three hits and three RBIs to lead Saint Louis to a 5-0 triumph over
Nicholls State Friday afternoon at Southeastern Louisiana's Jimmy John's Lion
Classic 1.
The Billikens, who earlier defeated Jacksonville
State 5-2, improved to 2-0. Nicholls State slipped to 1-1.
Van Nostrand matched the RBI total she produced in
the Jacksonville State game. Two of her three hits against Nicholls State were
doubles, giving her three on the young season.
Nicholls State committed four errors, and all five
Saint Louis runs were unearned.
The Billikens scored all they would need in the top
of the first. Jessica Buschjost
reached on a two-base error, and Madeline Brungardt reached on another miscue while sacrificing
Buschjost to third.
After Brungardt stole second, Van Nostrand poked a
single that scored Buschjost and moved Brungardt to third. Van Nostrand went to
second on the play. Alyson Brand
made it 2-0 and reached on a fielder's choice with a squeeze bunt that plated
Brungardt and advanced Van Nostrand to third. With one out, Elizabeth
Everingham's ground ball chased
Van Nostrand home to boost the Billiken lead to 3-0.
Saint Louis added two insurance runs in the fourth.
Erin Harcar singled with one
out, stole second and scooted to third when Buschjost reached on an error.
Buschjost swiped second, and one out later, Van Nostrand doubled to right center
to give the Bills a 5-0 cushion.
Buschjost, Lindsay Friedman, Kelsey Biggs and Everingham had a single apiece for the Billikens.
Winning pitcher Laney Kneib worked the first four innings and allowed no hits
and one walk. Brianna Lore gave
just one hit in two innings, and Everingham yielded two hits in the seventh but
preserved the shutout.
SLU plays twice again Saturday, taking on UT Martin
at 10 a.m. and tournament host Southeastern Louisiana at 12:30 p.m.
