PHILADELPHIA - Mallory Eggert
scored 14 points and collected five rebounds, but No. 3 seed Fordham advanced
to the Atlantic 10 Championship semifinals with a 65-48 victory over Saint
Louis Saturday night in a quarterfinal game at Hagan Arena on the Saint
Joseph's University campus.
The
No. 11 seed Billikens, who toppled No. 6 seed Butler in the first round Friday,
finished the season 12-19. Fordham will take a 23-7 record into its Sunday
semifinal against No. 10 seed Temple.
Eggert
was 7-of-13 from the floor in her final game as a Billiken. She moved into
seventh place on SLU's career rebounds list with 668 boards.
Courtney Webb and Desirae Ball
scored eight points apiece for Saint Louis, while Lorreal Jones
tallied six points and tied Eggert for team-high honors with five rebounds.
Saint Louis earned a 34-31 advantage on the glass.
Jacy Bradley
registered three assists and moved into fourth place on the Billikens' all-time
list. Bradley finished her career with 347 assists.
Fordham's
Marah Strickland recorded game highs of 22 points and eight rebounds.
Strickland connected on four of the Rams' eight 3-pointers. Arielle Collins had
13 points and five assists, Samantha Clark contributed 10 points and six
rebounds, and Erin Rooney posted nine points, six rebounds, six assists and
four steals.
Fordham
jumped out to a 9-2 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by Strickland and another
trey by Collins. Jumpers by Jones and Eggert made it a three-point game, but an
8-2 spurt put Fordham on top 17-8.
The
Billikens used a 10-foot bank shot by Ball, a pull-up jumper in the lane by
Bradley and Ball's backdoor layup to narrow the gap to five, 19-14. However,
the Rams scored on their next five possessions, including 3-pointers by
Strickland and Collins, to build a 30-16 cushion en route to a 34-18 halftime
advantage.
After
buckets by Eggert and Ball cut the Fordham lead to 34-22, an 8-1 run gave the
Rams a 42-23 advantage. The Billikens found an offensive groove of their own and
scored on five consecutive and seven of nine possessions, but Fordham responded
with points on six straight and eight of nine touches to build a 63-36 lead.
"Hats
off to Fordham, they have a great team and had too much power for us tonight,"
head coach Lisa Stone said.
"They got going early. We decided we would try to shut down the lane and give
up the three, and sure enough they started out leading 9-2 on three 3-pointers.
"Mallory
Eggert played very courageously tonight, and our entire team didn't quit. I
told our players during our last timeout that I wanted them to play basketball
the way they've learned to play the game, play it the right way with respect
for their opponent, their teammates and themselves. I thought we did that.
"I
thought we could get the deficit down to 10 points in the second half," Stone
said. "We got some good shots and established an inside game, but it was just
too late against a really good team. Fordham threw the first punch and didn't
let up.
"We're
very proud of what we've done this year. We didn't recruit any of our players,
and they could have said no to a new coaching staff. But they embraced us and
practiced hard the entire year. Nobody jumped out of the boat, and everyone
stayed locked in all season. We've set the stage and changed the culture for
the future.
"It's tough for the season to end, but we have no
regrets," Stone said. "We gutted it out after playing a close game last night
and played our tails off until the final buzzer. I'm very proud of our seniors
and of our entire team."
