Billikens Cap Off Billiken Challenge With Sweep

ST. LOUIS - The Saint Louis volleyball team finished the Billiken Challenge with a 1-3 loss to Youngstown State and a 3-0 sweep of Bradley. The Bills finished second in the tournament and Mallory Dillon and Danielle Rygelski earned All-Tournament plaudits. Saint Louis is now 4-7 on the year.

In the first set against YSU, the Billikens traded points with the Penguins, but the the twin attack of Rygelski (five kills) and Dillon (six kills) led SLU to a 25-23 victory. Youngstown State responded with an 11-point run in the second set to even the score at a game apiece. The Billikens were unable to overcome the YSU defense and dropped sets three and four by scores of 25-20 and 25-21, respectively.

Dillon (17 kills, 11 digs) and Rygelski (14 kills, 13 digs) each recorded double-doubles in the contest.

In the final game of the tournament, SLU erupted against Bradley. In the first set, Dillon (seven kills) led the Billikens to a .405 hitting percentage. They claimed the first game 25-22. Rygelski took the reins in set two, notching five kills on seven attacks with no errors to lead SLU to a 25-19 set victory. She kept the momentum in the final set, recording a set-leading nine kills. SLU won the third 25-23. 

The front line trio of Maryann Ejele (four blocks), Nicole Sniffen (four blocks) and Megan Gilbert (five blocks) gave the Braves fits all match. Bradley hit .174 for the match. Dillon recorded 13 kills and 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Rygelski lead Saint Louis with 18 kills and a .452 hitting percentage against Bradley.

The Billikens return to action next weekend, Sept. 20-21 in Fayetteville, Ark. in the Razorback Invitational. Saint Louis will join South Alabama (Sept. 20 at 4:30 p.m.), Kansas State (Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.) and Arkansas (Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.) in a very talented field.
