Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS - The Billiken baseball team split a doubleheader at La Salle, winning the first game 5-4, but dropping the second contest 4-3. Junior James Norwood (8-1) picked up his eighth win of the season, the fifth-highest total for a single season in Saint Louis history. Also in game one, Matt Eckelman picked up his ninth save. Only Travis Parker (10 saves in 2011 and 12 saves in 2012) has collected more saves in a season than Eckelman. Eckelman was hit with the loss in game two.
The Billikens are now 32-19 overall and 18-7 in Atlantic 10 play. This is the highest conference win total SLU has ever had in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
In the first game, Saint Louis had a big second inning, plating three runs in the frame. It was the sixth consecutive game in which SLU has had a three-run inning.
Catcher Jake Henson powered the Billiken lineup in game one. The sophomore went 3-4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Alec Solé also went 3-4 with an RBI. Danny Mannion scored two runs and went 1-4 in the win.
In game two, all of SLU's offense came from home runs. Freshman Michael Cusenza, senior Danny Brennan and sophomore Michael Bozarth each hit solo home runs. However, the Explorers scored a run in each of the final three innings to top the Bills.
With a game one win, the Billikens now own a half game lead over Saint Joseph's in the Atlantic 10 standings. SJU has two games to play in the season while the Bills have one game remaining against the Explorers.
The Bills wrap up the 2014 regular season on Saturday, May 17 against La Salle. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
