HAMMOND, La. – A three-run fifth inning lifted Saint Louis to a 4-2 victory over UT Martin on Sunday in the final game of Southeastern Louisiana's Lion Classic Scramble.
Alex Nickel went 3-for-4 to lead the Billikens, who improved to 7-6. Ohio Valley Conference member UT Martin slipped to 7-6.
Trailing 1-0, Saint Louis scored the tying run in the top of the fourth inning. Lindsay Friedman was hit by a pitch with two outs, stole second and scored on Alyssa Tarquinio's single.
Hailey Weavers ignited the fifth-inning rally with a one-out double. Mackenzie Peter followed with a single, and Elizabeth Everingham was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
A passed ball scored Weavers, Brianna Lore's single scored Peter, and Everingham crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Allie Macfarlane also singled in the inning.
UT Martin scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate with one out. But Laney Kneib, who registered her second save, got a strikeout and a fly ball to preserve the victory.
Lore (3-4) picked up the win in the circle. She struck out five, walked only one and allowed one unearned run and three hits in four innings. Kneib gave just one run and one hit in her three innings of work.
Up next for the Billikens is the Indiana University Classic in Bloomington, Ind. SLU faces Austin Peay and Eastern Illinois twice each before concluding the tournament against the host Hoosiers.
