LAWRENCE, Kan. – Elizabeth Everingham drove in a career-high five runs, including a game-tying three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, to lead Saint Louis to an 11-10, nine-inning victory over Northern Colorado Saturday morning at the Jayhawk Invitational.
The win is SLU's ninth in succession, breaking the record for the longest winning streak in program history set by last year's team. The Billikens (15-6) have won 11 of their last 12 games.
Saint Louis, which scored nine of its 11 runs with two outs, came from behind twice. The Billikens trailed 9-5 before pulling even in the sixth and 10-9 after Northern Colorado (5-10-1) scored a run in the top of the eighth.
In the first, a double by Alex Nickel, a walk to Mackenzie Peter and Lindsay Friedman's hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with nobody out. Everingham's sacrifice fly scored Nickel.
With one out, Alyssa Tarquinio walked to re-load the bases, and a free pass to Hailey Weavers forced in Peter. Friedman scored when Emma Buckles was hit by a pitch, and it was 3-0 Billikens.
Northern Colorado tallied a run in the third and two in the fourth to tie it, but SLU regained the upper hand with two runs in the fourth. With two away, Miranda Cotton singled and stole second, and Nickel walked. Both scored on a double by Peter.
The Billikens surrendered the lead right away, however, as Northern Colorado struck for six runs in the fifth to go on top 9-5. That set the stage for Saint Louis' four-run rally in the sixth.
Nickel extended the inning with a single after the first two batters were retired. Peter walked, and Friedman chased home Nickel with a double. Everingham followed with her fourth homer of the season, a blast to left field that made it a 9-9 game.
Both teams scored a run in the eighth with the international tiebreaker rule in effect. Following Friedman's sacrifice bunt that moved Peter from second to third, Everingham delivered her second sacrifice fly of the game.
Winning pitcher Laney Kneib (5-0), the starter who exited in the fourth and returned in the fifth, retired the side in order in the Northern Colorado ninth. With two down in the bottom half, Nickel drew her third walk of the game with Weavers, the placed runner, still at second. Peter then rapped a single to right center that brought Weavers home with the game winner.
Kneib allowed just two earned runs and six hits in 7 2/3 innings. She struck out two and walked three. Brianna Lore had two hits, including a double, Everingham added a single to her home run for a two-hit day, and Tarquinio and Weavers registered a single apiece.
The Billikens will face Omaha later Saturday. The scheduled start time is 4:30 p.m.
